A customer has some scrap metal at their company and would like to get a roll-off bin so he can recycle it. How does this process work? Let’s walk thru it. First, the customer will call Macon Iron at 478-743-6773 or 800-342-1933 and tell our receptionist what he needs. She will route him to one of our sales/service representatives. To make sure that we provide the best service possible, the sales rep will ask several questions. What type of scrap metal is it, what quantity is there, how many loads will it take to haul, what size bin is needed, where is the company located? From this, Joel or Laurie will estimate if the value of the metal will cover the expense of placing a bin and transporting the material to Macon Iron. In most cases, a visit is necessary to give the customer a specific price quote on the metal and to track mileage in order that trucking may be factored. A site visit eliminates most surprises and can address any unusual circumstances. Once a quote has been given and agreed to between Macon Iron and the customer, this information is entered into our data base, the customer is set up as an account, and a dispatch ticket is issued to allow a bin to be placed onsite. The customer will have been advised how to properly, safely and legally load the bin and what materials may and may not be placed inside. When the bin is full, the customer calls into our dispatcher to request either a swap or a pick up and keep on the container. If a swap is needed, our dispatcher will send a roll-off truck with an empty bin and will leave the empty bin onsite at our customer, returning to Macon Iron with the full one. If the customer has finished the job and is done with the bin, our roll-off truck will be dispatched with no bin, pick up and keep the full bin, and will return to Macon Iron.
From the point that the metal is received at the shear, the crane operator feeds the metal onto the infeed table of the shear. Metal is run thru the shear and cut into 4’ sections that are consistent with consuming mill specifications. Once processed, sheared metal is then loaded into railcars for shipment to the consuming mills for smelting into new steel. As the new steel products roll out and a consumer purchases this new product, then the recycling triangle has been completed. Only when we as consumers buy recycled products has the loop been closed!
