SCRAP METAL RECYCLING SPECIFICATIONS STEEL – FERROUS METAL –
Priced on a gross ton basis (2240 pounds) based on monthly consuming mill pricing. Pricing will fluctuate monthly and pricing is determined on the month of delivery.
Unprepared Grade – Also called Shearing Grade. Metal will be miscellaneous varying lengths, widths and thicknesses. Metal should be fully containerized, not hanging over side of bin nor sticking more than 12” over top of bin. Can include galvanized, piping, cast iron, steel and iron. Plate & structural okay in this grade.
Prepared Grade - Prepared steel is cut to consuming mill specs by the customer and is paid at a higher price since less processing is required. All steel must be cut 4’X2’ and lay flat in bin. Grading must be consistent throughout bin – no pieces larger than 4’x2’ may be in bin or load will be downgraded.
Light Sheet Iron – lightweight metals such as ductwork or tin should be kept separate. This material will normally be voluminous but will not have great weight to it. Every effort should be made to compress or crush light sheet to achieve maximum loadweights.
Torching Scrap - Torching will be metal that is too large or thick to go thru our shear and that must be cut manually with a cutting torch. The lowest grade of steel. Keep separate from shearing steel or light sheet grades.
NON-FERROUS METALS –
Priced on the date of delivery on a per pound basis based on the market on the date of delivery. Be aware that theft of non-ferrous is rampant and these metals are frequently stolen out of unsecured bins.
Aluminum - separate by alloy if possible for maximum value. Keep aluminum cans separate from scrap aluminum.
Copper – separate out by #1 Copper, #2 Copper and Insulated grades.
Stainless Steel – separate by alloy, also separate by pure stainless versus stainless with steel attachments or screws.
Other non-ferrous - Keep other grades of non-ferrous or white metals separated by grade of material (nickel, titanium, brass, etc.)
VERY IMPORTANT –
* All oils, solvents or fluids must be thoroughly drained from all machinery prior to acceptance at Macon Iron. If metals have any solvents sprayed onto them, make sure you are in compliance with storm water runoff regulation while the bin is on your property.
* Ferrous and non-ferrous metals MUST be kept separate from each other. Do not mix aluminum with steel as each grade will contaminate the other. Keep separate to ensure quality standards are met and to gain the full value of each material.
* Any refrigeration units containing CFC’s must have coolant properly reclaimed and a CFC statement must be signed prior to delivery of the units.
* 55 Gallon Steel Drums will be accepted ONLY after a Drum Indemnification Agreement has been executed and on file at Macon Iron certifying that drums have been triple rinsed per EPD regulations and certifying the contents of the drums. Bins are for METAL ONLY. No trash, no pallets or wood waste, no concrete, no rubber, no tree limbs or yard waste. If there is contamination in with the metal, non-metal items will be documented with digital photos and transported to the landfill for disposal at a charge to the customer. Heavily contaminated loads will be downgraded or rejected and sent to the landfill. Macon Iron is not permitted to accept “Wet Waste” so do not include this in the bins. Loads containing wet waste will be rejected outright.
