MACON IRON HOLDING SIXTH SCULPTURE CONTEST

March 10, 2006

MACON, GA – Macon Iron is sponsoring its sixth sculpture contest in collaboration with Central Georgia Technical College, Mercer University, and Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus. The theme of this year’s contest is:

Junque’ Yard Toys

The contest is held in order to increase awareness in recycling in local communities, and to showcase the talent of local college art and welding students. Past themes in the very popular and nationally recognized contest include: Junque’ Yard Dawgs in 2001, Junque’ Yard Bugs in 2002, Junque’ Yard Sea Life in 2003, Junque’ Yard Georgia Wildlife in 2004 and last year’s Junque’ Yard Furniture.

As in years past, there will be two categories of awards – one set for individual works and one set for group work. Over $2,000.00 in prize money will be awarded to the individuals and colleges. The sculptures, which must be made primarily of recyclable materials from Macon Iron, must resemble some type of toy.

The sculptures will be judged, and the winners announced on Sunday, March 19th at a reception at Macon Iron’s retail can location at 181 Weldwood Lane (near the corner of 7th Street and Edgewood Avenue). The reception will begin at 4:30 pm, and winners will be announced at 5:00 pm. The reception is free and open to the public, and sculptures will remain on display until March 29th, when some entries will be moved to Americus for display.

Junque’ Yard Toys Sculpture Contest not only recognizes the individual students and their colleges, but attempts to make the community aware of the many different forms of recycling. Macon Iron, recycling in Georgia since 1919, realizes that there is more to recycling than just recovering used material and returning them into the marketplace as a raw material for making new products. As demonstrated by these art and welding students, recyclable material can be used to create fascinating pieces of art in addition to being processed into raw material form.
